As a passionate advocate for youth and community welfare, my journey began during my B.Sc. in Statistics at Patna University in 1988. A survey project on youth addiction opened my eyes to the pressing issue of substance abuse. This led me to form the organization “Youth Mobilization for National Advancement,” registered under the Societies Registration Act of 1860.

In 1989, with support from the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, we established our first Counseling Centre for Drug Abuse Prevention in Patna, which evolved into a full-fledged De-addiction and Rehabilitation Centre by 1991. My research on drug abuse and alcoholism in Patna, under the guidance of Dr. Nawal Kishore Chaudhary, further fueled my commitment to this cause.

Driven by a desire to deepen my impact, I pursued an M.A. in Social Work from Delhi University, graduating in 1997. This program enriched my professional skills and provided extensive field exposure, shaping my approach to social work. Today, I lead Disha Deaddiction and Rehabilitation Center, dedicated to helping individuals reclaim their lives through compassionate and participatory methods.

Disha – Guiding Towards a New, Addiction-Free Life

------

Established in 1989 by the Youth Mobilization for National Advancement, an all-India registered voluntary organization, Disha has been a beacon of hope for individuals struggling with addiction. Over the years, Disha has successfully treated approximately 21,000 individuals addicted to substances such as smack, brown sugar, alcohol, Tedegesic, Pethidine, Morphine, Ganja, and Bhang. Our dedicated team has earned recognition at state, national, and international levels. Notably, the International Labour Organization (ILO) and the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNDCP) selected Disha among 350 organizations across India for its exemplary work in de-addiction and rehabilitation.

As nuclear family systems become more prevalent, the pressure on individuals is increasing, making addiction an easy escape for many. This is where community-based interventions play a crucial role. These interventions are the most effective way to address addiction problems, providing support and resources within the community to help individuals overcome their struggles.

At Disha, we believe in a holistic approach to recovery, focusing not just on the individual but also on their reintegration into society. Our community-based programs are designed to provide continuous support, ensuring that individuals do not feel isolated in their journey towards sobriety. By fostering a supportive community environment, we aim to reduce the stigma associated with addiction and promote long-term recovery.

Shanti Kutir Mahila Punarwas Kendra: Empowering Women Towards a Better Future

Shanti Kutir Mahila Punarwas Kendra, operated by Youth Mobilization for National Advancement (YMNA) and funded by SAKSHAM under the Department of Social Welfare, Government of Bihar, has been a sanctuary for women in need since May 2014. Located in Patliputra Colony, Patna, this center aims to support women who have resorted to begging due to challenging life circumstances.

Objectives and Mission:

Shanti Kutir Mahila Punarwas Kendra serves as a “home away from home” for elderly, sick, and destitute women, particularly those engaged in begging. Established in July 2014 under the Mukhyamantri Bhikhshavriti Nivaran Yojana (MBNY), the center provides shelter and rehabilitation to over 50 women and girls across two facilities. The center works closely with the Bihar police to ensure the safety and well-being of its residents.

Key Features:

Mukhyamantri Bhikhshavriti Nivaran Yojana (MBNY):

MBNY is a state government initiative aimed at protecting and promoting the rights of beggars. The scheme ensures their care, protection, development, and socio-economic empowerment through various policies and programs. By providing a supportive framework, MBNY helps individuals transition from a life of begging to one of dignity and self-reliance.

Shanti Kutir Mahila Punarwas Kendra stands as a testament to the power of community-based interventions in addressing social issues. Through dedicated efforts, it continues to transform lives, offering hope and direction to those in need.

Disha Care and Social Service Foundation

Disha Care & Social Service Foundation: Nurturing Underprivileged Children

Disha Care & Social Service Foundation, operated by Youth Mobilization for National Advancement (YMNA), is a charitable non-profit organization registered under the Societies Registration Act of 1860 in Bihar and Uttar Pradesh. Located in Patliputra Colony, Patna, Bihar, the foundation has been dedicated to supporting underprivileged children since its establishment in 2016.

Our Mission:

At Disha Care & Social Service Foundation, we provide comprehensive care to children aged 3-14 years, focusing on education, nutrition, medical care, and recreational activities. Our goal is to address the critical needs of children from impoverished backgrounds, including orphans and street children who lack access to basic necessities.

Key Services:

Our Impact:

Most of the children we serve come from extremely poor communities, with some being orphans or street children rescued from railway stations by Childline, the Child Welfare Committee (CWC), and the Juvenile Justice (JJ) Act authority. These children are often taken care of by elderly grandparents or referred to us by residents of Patna’s slums. We also focus on treating street children trapped in addiction, providing them with a safe and supportive environment.

Collaborations:

We work closely with district administration and government departments such as the Police and the Narcotics Control Bureau to offer the best treatment and rehabilitation facilities for abandoned and drug-addicted children. Our center has the capacity to accommodate 50 vulnerable children, ensuring they receive the care and support they need to thrive.

At Disha Care & Social Service Foundation, we are committed to creating a nurturing environment where every child can access education, food, and medical care, empowering them to lead healthier and more fulfilling lives.
